How Do I Format A Manuscript?

The recommended format for the manuscript of a novel, both here and in the USA is as follows. A4 format. 12 pt Times New Roman typeface, double-spaced. Each new paragraph should be indented by one cm. The first line of new dialogue should be indented. By new, I mean each new character, so as to separate them from each other. The first line of a new chapter should not be indented. If you have a change of time or place, it should be double, double spaced and not indented. The left and right margins should allow for an average of 15 words per line. This is the recommendation by all literary agents and publishers. It’s calculated for ease of reading.

Add Page Numbers to PDF: All You Need to Know

You are encouraged to print out the script, type it out yourself and then proof it so that you have all the necessary information so that you can proof it more thoroughly. If the writer was given a manuscript and allowed to change it, it is okay if this was a personal change. However, this is not necessarily acceptable. If there is a major edit of the manuscript, it is expected the writer to be given a copy of it so that he/she can read and reproof the manuscript. Be very careful with new dialogue. It should not be more difficult to read than the dialogue in the previous chapter. You must include a chapter summary with key information of the paragraph. A Summary/Synopsis, or, the Foreword, is a short excerpt of the book that is meant to give you a flavor of the book, and is NOT required..
