At the moment I usually use easyabc. Now I do have musical friends that say oh good golly what is that? It looks aweful. However, I find easyabc REALLY easy to type score into the computer. To me it makes a lot of sense. And it is free. I also can send the .abc file to friends via email or even on a facebook message. It will notate, display, and play concurrently several voices. You can export midi files. Musescore will also import abcnotation files. I find I use musescore for playing along with songs that have difficult rhythms. Both have music repositories online. Musescore music is easier to find.

You can also upload music directly to their website. I've included a page showing links to some of their collections on this website. I like the idea and I would like to make my own collection. Now, I've been using Muse score for years. Muse scores are great for the first time composer. There is a lot of detail in scoring this, particularly the tempo and instrumentation. You can use any kind of drum, guitar, bass, keyboard, fiddle, or sitar. You don't necessarily have to write in an alphabetical score format. You can use armatures, and even computer generated score format. The more notes, the less work. There are over 400 songs that I wrote for Muse score by hand.
