First of all Vasco de Gama is not the founder of India. India existed for many centuries before that. Vasco de Gama found the direct sea route to India in 1498, thus paving the way for Europeans to come and Trade and later Colonise India. Many European travellers were looking to find a direct trade route with India. The prime reason was the spices, that India used to export to Europe. This trade had got disrupted due to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Spices was required for consumption and digestion of red meat for the Europeans. It was required for preservation of meat as well. It was the need for these spices that forced the Europeans to look for direct sea route to reach India. This paved way for the commencement of the age of geographical discoveries. Thus in 1492, Vasco de Gama reached America and in 1498, he came to India, by landing in Calicut.
