What Happens To Scientific Articles Which Are Published On The?

Usually, it is detected by editors or reviewers who (should) know work in that area. I am not sure whether you are thinking of the kind of plagiarism where someone simply lifts an article and changes the author, or where an author tries to publish what is essentially the same stuff twice. There are plenty of cases that approach the latter; not exact replicas, but with a lot of overlap. I suspect that some get way with stealing someone else’s work if t send it to an obscure journal with poor standards of scrutiny.

When I was a librarian, I knew a person who was in jail for a few years for trying to get a doctor to sign on as his co-author for a paper he wrote. He had also plagiarized a bunch of books. The doctor did eventually confess to it, and they lost their license. I know some editors who deal with this stuff. This goes back to the “bounty hunter” days, when there were a bunch of guys who would call all the publishers with “claims” of plagiarism, and take them to court for being “stealing” somebody else's name. These guys were very active for a long time, and a lot of the time, it wasn't even that close. The whole point of a court is for a judge to decide the facts of the case without the need to reach some sort of “he said/she said”.
